Rhythm Section Returns to African Acid Is The Future’s Party in Berlin, Celebrating a Decade of Friendship

African Acid Is The Future, was founded by DJs, producers, and curators MaryisonAcid (Maryama), WolfisonAcid, and Dauwd. Their monthly residency has been brightening up the Berlin party scene for almost a decade, with a multi genre approach spanning across, house, techno, jazz, post-punk, or “whatever works” as Maryama says herself.

Every change has been carefully considered by the team, being mindful to keep the foundational ethos of the night intact. And with each dance, African Acid Is The Future explores more and more the cosmic and psychedelic connection between people and sound.

In 2012, label boss Bradley Zero met Dauwd (fresh from a release on Pictures Music, based in Peckham) peculiarly at Butlins, Bognor Regis. Their long-standing friendship carried on even after Dauwd moved to Berlin, where he met Maryama. Since then, Rhythm Section and African Acid Is The Future have collaborated on each other’s home turf twice in each city.

The latest dance, at ZENNER Berlin, was full from floor to ceiling with tall green plants and jungle leaves. RS native Z Lovecraft opened up the night with a wide selection of tempos. From lo-fi Lagos mp3s, to idm heavy hitters, joining connections between techno and sub-saharan sounds.

Next up was Tshegue, whose high octane live set caused chaos on the dancefloor. Their songs are influenced by the city of Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with punk and electro sensibilities. Incorporating live music onto their bill has always been a long term ambition for Maryama and Dauwd, and Tshegue laid the perfect ground to begin a new tradition.

Bradley played a euphoric set that traveled from the UK underground scene to each corner of the globe, through the early hours of the morning as the sun began to rise across the River Spree in East Berlin. Love is always shown whenever Rhythm Section meets African Acid and we can’t wait for the next party, wherever it may be.
