Hidden Spheres
Hidden Spheres, aka Tom Harris, hails from Manchester with almost a decade’s worth of music across many different labels. His work has been shared by sister imprints Lobster Theremin and Distant Hawaii, Peckham’s Rhythm Section, alongside Church, Scissor and Thread, and his own imprint, Fruit Merchant.
Tom’s sound began with the roots of Detroit house, inspired by crate digging and old soul records. His production has grown to incorporate sounds from all over the dance music spectrum. Late night ambience ran through his 2015 EP, ‘Waiting’. And on ‘Breathing Deep’, in 2020, percussive elements came to the forefront as live instrumentation was accompanied by acid synths and basslines.
This evolution has included other genres, with nods to disco, lounge and jazz being embraced by the Mancunian producer. On ‘By and Bye’, the sound of the EP falls into categories of jazz, balearic house, and neo soul as the listener is guided through the different colours of Tom’s production style.
Hidden Spheres’s first contribution to Rhythm Section in 2016, ‘Well Well’, was championed as one of the stand out underground electronica records in recent years. Since then he’s worked with artists such as the emerging UK guitarist Oscar Jerome, on their laid back jazz house fusion project, ‘Words Can’t Explain’.
In 2022, Tom released his second project on the same label, entitled ‘You Are Not Your Body’, signaling yet another regeneration in the Mancunian producer’s career. The EP sees Hidden Spheres at his most euphoric. 90s synths and retro drum machines mark the intersection between early prog and Detroit House. This project channels the energy of meditation and self love as we are met with an emotional release of joy.
